Stump Grinding & Removal in Hattiesburg, MS

That leftover stump is a mower hazard, a trip hazard, and an open invitation to termites. We grind it below grade and you're done with it in one visit.

Why Stumps Shouldn't Stay

A cut tree isn't a finished job. In Mississippi's warm, wet climate, a leftover pine or oak stump rots slowly and feeds the things you'd rather keep away from your house — termites and carpenter ants set up in decaying wood, and water oak and sweetgum stumps send up sucker sprouts for years, turning one stump into a weekly trimming chore. Stumps also crack mower blades, trip kids and grandparents, and sit right where you wanted the new fence, patio, or garden bed.

Grinding is the practical answer: a toothed cutting wheel chews the stump and surface roots down 6–12 inches below grade — deep enough for sod, soil, and most planting — without the cost and yard damage of digging the whole root ball out. The grindings become a mulch pile you can keep for beds or we haul away, your choice.

Stump Grinding FAQs

How much does stump grinding cost?

Price is based mainly on diameter and how many stumps you have. A single average yard stump is typically a couple hundred dollars or less; several stumps in one visit are noticeably cheaper per stump. Bundling grinding with a removal is the best value of all.

How deep do you grind?

Standard grinding goes 6–12 inches below grade — plenty for grass and typical planting. If you're pouring concrete or installing a footing where the stump was, tell us at the estimate and we'll grind deeper in that spot.

What happens to the wood chips?

Your call. Many Hattiesburg homeowners keep the grindings as free mulch for beds. If you'd rather have a level, clean hole ready for soil and seed, we'll haul the chips off — just say so when we quote the job.

Will the tree grow back from the roots?

Grinding below grade stops sprouting for pines and most oaks. A few aggressive species can push a sucker from a far root; if one shows up, a quick snip while it's small ends it.

Can the grinder fit in my backyard?

Our grinders fit through a standard yard gate, which covers most Hattiesburg, Petal, and Oak Grove lots. If access is unusual — terraced yards, narrow side gates off alleys — mention it when you call and we'll plan around it.
